Keeping your account safe

When using online accounts, there’s always a risk of someone getting access to it. There are a few ways someone would be able to get hold of your account, and it’s important to be aware of them.
  1. Fake emails – They’ll look like they’re from Gumtree (or any other online business) but really they’re not. Always remember that most websites you’re registered with won’t ever ask for your details or password. If you receive an email which does, don’t reply.
  2. The email will usually ask you to log into your account for some reason or another. It will have a link that takes you to the website they’re pretending to be. Avoid using these links and use your browser to go to the website yourself. The website they send you to will look like the real one, when really it isn’t.
Their aim is to get your login details. So when you go onto a fake website, you’ll be giving them your email address and password without even realising you are.
Make sure you login through the site directly without using any links, and always check for a small padlock next to the website address on your browser, to make sure it’s a secure site.
