I can’t log in with Facebook anymore. Why?

I can’t log in with Facebook anymore. Why?

We’re changing the way you can log into Gumtree if you’ve been logging in using your Facebook account. You’ll always be welcome on the site of course, so all you’ll need to do is use the email address you use to log into Facebook, and set a new password.
The change will start around the end of the first week of June. When you get to the login page, you’ll see something like the box below.

Right now, the login page has changed a little bit, but you’ll still be able to log in with Facebook. You’ll notice the ‘Existing users can also still log in with Facebook*’ is available for you to use, but it won’t be in the near future.

We’re working to make the transition as smooth as possible. You’ll be able to keep the same email address, and the same account, but you’ll need to set a password that’s separate from your Facebook account. This is the only thing that changes.

Here's some answers to a couple of questions you may have about the change:

Q: Why is Gumtree removing Facebook Log-in functionality?
A: We're constantly testing out features we offer on the site, and keep only those features that make things simpler to use Gumtree. Facebook log-in was only being used by a small percentage of people, so we decided to take a step back and remove Log-in with Facebook.

Q: Is Gumtree/eBay at war with Facebook?
A: No. We still partner with Facebook in many areas including advertising. We just found that the 'Log In with Facebook' wasn't right for us.

Q: This makes it harder for people to login. Isn't this counter-productive?
A: Most Gumtree users won't see any difference (except for a cleaner login page and registration page). For people who previously used to login with Facebook - you'll just be asked to enter a password when prompted, to keep access to your account.

Q: What will Gumtree do with the Facebook data it has from the previous tie-up?
A: Gumtree only asked for and received minimal data (like 'name' and 'email address'). We'll keep this data so that people who used to login with Facebook can still use their account.

Q: How many users are being affected by the change?
A: We can't say for sure, but it's a minority.

Q: Why did you keep Login with Google?
A: Some people like the simplicity of social logins, but don't have a preference between Facebook or Google. We felt like we didn't need both, so we choose Google because it's hugely popular with our Android App users. (We want to keep offering this service to those primarily, but we also wanted to keep the same familiar login page between out three platforms (web, Android, iOS))
