General posting rules

 The legal (but important) bits:
  • Given the rules that we have around the use of our site we advise that users should be over 18 to advertise on our website.  We recommend that users should be over 18 to also reply to ads.
  • We reserve the right to remove any ads that we feel are not relevant or of any value to the Gumtree community with or without notice.
  • Where ads that you have paid for are removed by us, in most cases we’ll refund your fees within 1 week from the removal of the ad.
  • We reserve the right to remove ads without refund if we feel that our rules or terms & conditions are regularly or deliberately breached.
  • In the interests of everyone else, people who regularly break our posting rules may find their future use of the site restricted.

The do’s and don’ts mentioned here apply to ads posted in ALL categories.

Do:

Keep it local
We like to keep things local, so post on the Gumtree site that’s geographically closest to you e.g. if you’ve got a flat to rent in Manchester, then please post in the Manchester site.

Post in the most relevant category
Post in the category that most closely matches your ad. People tend to find what they’re looking for by browsing within categories, so posting your ad in the right category will increase the chances of your ad being seen.

Follow the category specific posting rules

In addition to these general rules that apply to all ads, we also have some specific rules for each category:

Write in English
As a UK & Ireland site we ask everyone to write their ads in English.

Don’t:

Olympic Adverts
For legal reasons we do not allow the reference to 'Olympic' in any of of our ads.
Also the sale of Olympic tickets or associated events is not allowed on our site.

No duplicate ads
Only 1 ad per item / job / flat / service in one category allowed. Don’t re-word your ad and post it across multiple categories. That’s not allowed either and we’ll be able to tell.

No links to other websites
Don't put a link or reference number in your ad directing people to further details on another website. Your ad should have all the information and details a reader needs to know, so there’s no need for you to send them elsewhere to view more information. Remember, you can:

No keyword spamming
You know those ads that have lots of irrelevant phrases or words in them? That’s called keyword spamming, and it’s used by some not-very-nice people trying to get their ads noticed in result pages. We don’t like keyword spammers because it makes searching for something very frustrating for everyone.

No ads for items on the 'not allowed' list
There are some items we don't accept ads for on Gumtree.  See the 'items not allowed' list.

No offensive/ adult language or images
Gumtree is a local site and we like to keep things friendly.   Ads reported to us as offensive will be removed.

No discrimation terms
Gumtree is a local site and we like to keep things friendly.   We do not allow you to use discrimation terms, either offensively or generally.  For example you can not ask for female only housemates.  You are however permitted to state that the current housemates are all female.
